  • My Daughter and the ER (Article)

Last week; Jewel fell on a concrete edge, causing bodily damage and a problem that couldn’t be resolved without a temporary diet change, some medicine and a major change in our routine. One scary, overnight, completely-sleepless-for-Mom-and-Dad-moment later; we found ourselves in the emergency department. During that time; prayer and warm well wishes from friends and family members were working for us in the background. Before hand, I prayed like Christ taught me “Father, keep us from the ER and let us sleep. Nothing happens without your say-so, so if we have to go, thy will be done.” We went. God didn’t give me what I wanted… yet. What I did get was one fortunate visit with no invasive actions toward my kid, one great doctor, a bunch of cool nurses and staff, then a lesson I asked for God to give my kid; to make sure she knows her Mom and Dad are always here for her. She knew. I could tell by the monkey-like little being clinging to us during that moment, and the “I want Mom AND Dad in the bed” when we got home. On the way out of the ER we passed by a large, white, refrigerated trailer; cooling unit running, stairs built up to the back, adorned by a funeral wreath. Perspective is odd when you’ve had 1.5 hours of sleep in a 38 hour period, mixed with a difficult experience. Occasional visual glitches and false earthquakes are some of the physical strangeness. But when you know you’re the driver, not the machine; the spirit can stay strong, steady, open and appreciative... no matter what. It's a beautiful thing. Check it out... Getting to God It's not my place to prove the existence of your spirit, it's your's

  • My Daughter Threw a Fit (Article)

A few nights ago, my kid malfunctioned for a good long moment. She screamed. She cried. She threw a toy and she repeated “you’re wrong!” See, Jewel has a powerful spirit and a powerful set of lungs. So when she misdirects those things, it hurts. Her tears melt my heart, even though I want to run out of the room and throw around a few explicit words. Basically, Jewel had thrown a fit over not wanting to clean up her toys. I gave her a fair choice and at the end of it, those toys got put up high for a couple of days. But before they did, I explained why. Here’s the shortened version of what I told her; that if I claim to love her, I can’t teach her that she can get what she wants by doing the wrong thing. I said I’d rather have her angry with me now, than to sacrifice her social and spiritual future for my comfort. Then I told her that God does the same thing with me. She immediately calmed down. Next day, Jewel asked for her toys back. All I needed was one moment of saying "no" to reenforce the lesson, and though I dreaded saying it, she shocked me. She calmly said “okay, you can’t give them to me yet because you don’t want me to learn to do the wrong thing to get what I want, but maybe tomorrow.” Then she held my hand. There are answers to why we have the hard lessons we do. Once we start and keep asking, life will only get better and there will always be a loving hand to grab. • My Daughter Touched my Face (Article)

This morning, just before my daughter woke; I laid down next to her, slowly rested my arm under her head and began gently rubbing her face. After a bit; Jewel, half awake, reached up quietly and put both hands on my face, then slowly opened her eyes and looked right at me. The wisdom in this 4-year-old’s face at that moment, silently staring at me, holding my face; it was astonishing. Tonight, as her mother read to her in bed, I laid my head on Jewel’s side, just silently building this intense appreciation for another day with her; constantly thinking about how tomorrow holds no promise of having her in my life. Every human loves someone. You don’t have to be a parent to feel that. You don’t have to have faith to be a good caregiver. But those of you who know our story deeply enough know about the glue that underlies it all and bonds tighter than anything else. When I was an Atheist, then Agnostic; I would have loved this child immensely, but I wouldn’t have understood love as well as I do now that I’ve explored the question; “Is God real?”. This post may have taken a strange turn for you. If it did, do yourself a favor… turn it back; because, even though the there might be some fog about how I connect my daughter with my faith, the beginning of this post means little without the end. Maybe it's a good time to ask; "Is God Real?" ________________________________________ Thanks for reading :) I spend a lot of late nights and challenging moments working hard. • My Daughter and the man on the Floor (Article)

Today I held my little girl as we entered a bathroom in a public park in Los Angeles. There we found a man; strung out, shaking, laying on the filthy, infected, cement floor. It was too late to shield her from such a sight. Her reaction was to pray for him. As I rubbed her feet and she drifted off to sleep tonight, I had a thought that silently brought me to tears. That man has the same face he had when he once looked like my child does tonight; tiny, innocent and in desperate need of care and love. He was that little baby boy, as if it was yesterday. Forgetting about him is against God's law. There is no worldly wisdom that can truly justify it. And while I'm on the subject, here's a testimony that almost always chokes me up: https://youtu.be/MafrgZKfD7s Thanks for reading :) I spend a lot of late nights and challenging moments working hard.
